When it comes to office buildings, our minds tend to think of a place full of cubicles, water coolers, and of course, work. At first sight, 350 Mission Street redefines the traditional workplace from the inside out. This Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) designed building rises 30 levels above the streets of San Francisco and supplies 420,000 square feet of office space. We joined the teams of Kilroy Realty and Webcor Builders for an in-depth look into what makes this building unique.From the outside we were greeted by a checker patterned building with a lobby you can see from down the street. Stretching 5 stories up, light pours in from the 90 feet of vertical glass panels as it reveals the lobby. An interior LED wall glows and transforms the exterior from within. The massive 40x70 foot LED display quickly becomes the center of attention. The unique take on art and architecture is a featured piece by renowned multimedia artist, Refik Anadol, titled: Virtual Depictions: San Francisco. Referred to as a constantly shifting and flowing “data sculpture,” the LED display is meant to draw the public into the space and take them on a visual journey. This 90-minute video plays with colors and shapes, creating a false sense of a three-dimensional space. It truly is something remarkable to see.350 Mission Street has created its lobby to be welcoming as part of a social engagement between the public and private realms. With retractable doors, the barrier between these realms disappear. On the mezzanine level you can find a cafe, bar, and restaurant by Michael Mina. The mezzanine is accessible via amphitheater seating making the lobby the perfect location for events and social gatherings.The innovation runs much deeper than just a beautiful lobby. This building was awarded the LEED Platinum Certification by cutting its energy consumption by one third through efficiency. From the exterior we can see what looks to be a weave pattern on the windows. This design uses high-performance, insulated glass to reduce solar induced heat yet maximize visibility. By using ultra thin concrete flooring, SOM was able to take full advantage of its window light. On top of all of this, the building was also designed for and exceeds regulations for seismic activity.Being central is key. Salesforce currently occupies the entire building and employs thousands of people. Located one block from the highly anticipated Transbay Transit Hub, 350 Mission will be linked to all of town. The construction of this tower is one of four new towers that are reshaping of the Market District and skyline of San Francisco.
