Designing a Hospital with Heart
What a start to the new year! I was hit hard with the insane flu that's infecting most of the US and it was rough... extremely rough. I've recovered but it wasn't without a trip to the hospital. Did you know, the American Hospital Directory says there are almost 4,000 hospitals in the United States? California alone has 347 of them! Think about the architecture! I recently had the privilege of photographing one of these California hospitals for HOK. The Hospital Scripps Memorial Hospital is located in La Jolla, near San Diego. It's undergoing a 25-year master plan that will transform its campus. HOK has lead the charge by designing this seven-story tower! It's home to the region's largest and most advanced center for patients with cardiovascular diseases, the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute. The Architect When HOK approached me to shoot the Cardiovascular Institute, I was thrilled with the opportunity to work with an award winning company. HOK is a global design & architecture firm that has been around for over 60 years. While collaborating on this shoot we captured amazing shots of their design. It's no wonder they're among the top 10 of Architectural Records top 300 architecture firms of 2017. Making Their Rounds In researching some of the latest trends in healthcare design, I read this article on how "... nurses' central role in patient care make them uniquely qualified to provide constructive input on facility projects." This is a great idea! It seems that designers are recruiting nurses to give input on the healthcare projects they're working on. Healthcare Fashion: Design More to Reveal Less Remember Jack Nicholson in Something's Gotta Give when he turns around in his hospital gown? One word... Hilarious! As funny as that was, I'm sure people have a fear of hospital gowns for that unfortunately, but necessary, opening in the back. That's all about to change! Care+Wear recently partnered with the Parson's School of Design to create a less embarrassing, fashionable, kimono-inspired hospital gown. The New York Times even weighed in on the modern redesign.

Working with HOK and their team was a major highlight of the shoot! I can't wait to do it again!
Searching Out Great Eats!
Discovering the best places to eat while I'm on location.
After a successful shoot of the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute, it was time to eat!
I've had a long time love of the restaurants in La Jolla, especially those with fantastic views along the coastline. Do you have a favorite I can add to my list?
